Workplace Standards Changes due to COVID-19

The recent pandemic has led to many temporary laws being passed which provide assistance in this time of crisis, particularly regarding special leave for employees impacted by COVID-19.

These laws change rapidly as more information becomes available and public health officials make new recommendations, and are different in each jurisdiction. Please consult the appropriate government sources for up-to-date information on this issue.


Employment Standards

Minimum Wage $11.95/hour
Minimum wage is expected to increase to $12.35/hour as of October 1, 2022

13 weeks unpaid leave for organ donation
17 weeks per year long-term illness or injury leave after 90 days employment
52 weeks in case of crime-related disappearance of a child, 104 weeks in case of death of a child

Temporary Lay-Offs &
Group Terminations
Lay-offs can be up to 8 weeks in a 16-week period
Group terminations at a single location within four weeks must give advance written notice to the Minister of Finance, based on the number of employees terminated: 10 weeks for 50 or more, 14 weeks for 101 or more, 18 weeks for 300 or more
