Stay Sharp and Fit!
IPM, WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THE REGIONAL EXECUTIVE, HOLDS TWO HALF-DAY WORKSHOPS OR FULL DAY CONFERENCES

Have you seen the recent Participaction television commercial? It sends a strong message to Canada's youth about staying sharp and fit. We need to send a similar message to HR and administration managers at all levels. We must become more engaged in order to keep up with rising industry standards.

We must be involved in continuous learning and professional development. For those individuals seeking CHRP recertification, this is a mandatory requirement. Professional development comes in many forms, from an in-class or self study course to a workshop or conference program offering the latest information on current issues. How many of us actually take the time to attend and learn? If we don't make the time, we're going to miss important opportunities to learn and progress. In today's volatile economy, those individuals not progressing may find themselves in an organizational restructuring squeeze and may have to start from "square one" when it comes to professional development and networking.

Our National Office receives a number of calls regularly requesting professional development workshops and conferences in areas where we have little regional support. We cannot hold events in areas where we have no local volunteers. As of now, we have five active chapters across Canada- Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax and Ottawa. Our two largest chapters in Toronto and Calgary are successfully run with the assistance of only one senior dedicated volunteer director on board. Amazing, when you think the associations have a combined membership of over 2,300 across Canada.

IPM, with the assistance of the regional executive, holds two half day workshops or full day conferences in each of the areas, developing sessions that meet the needs of our membership based on surveys, individual requests, etc. We even poll members on the preferred time, format and location. The number of members attending the professional development series is low. We run these programs at reasonable rates to accommodate your PD budgets. These sessions qualify for CHRP and other management industry recertification. We count on the support of members as well as our valued corporate clients and guests to be able to run these events at an affordable price.

Event participants routinely commend our teams on the excellent calibre of presenters provided. In the past two years, we have greatly expanded our range of topics in both our IPM Associations Members Quarterly Newsletters as well as at events to include issues on financial and business management in addition to our Recruitment and Employment Law updates. I am pleased to report that feedback has been excellent. We take pride in having assembled the highest calibre financial and people management experts in the country. As an added bonus, many of our newsletter contributors are featured as presenters at IPM events with outstanding reviews. Beyond providing our readership helpful strategies and tips, experts such as Steve Ashton from Bell Aliant, David Ray and Philip Gennis from Grant Thornton Ltd., Richard Nixon from Davis LLP, spend time, effort and money traveling around the country delivering information requested by our members on site.

Now is the time to consider attending the next event near you. Come learn and network! We need stronger support to continue, as well as to develop, new chapters. Our staff and volunteers work diligently to deliver what the majority wants to learn. We cannot do this without your participation. I urge you to visit our Events section at www.workplace.ca and register now for fall events. You won't be disappointed!
