Doug Mosher, RPR, RPT
A MAN ON THE MOVE

Doug Mosher has been employed by Metro Transit for 26 years. Claiming to be an original hard core Dartmouthian, Doug was educated in his home town of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia where both his grandparents and parents grew up. Doug went on to graduate from high school in 1972 and then ventured out west to Alberta where he worked as a ranch hand for six months, returning to Nova Scotia in 1973. Upon his arrival he began attending St Mary's University, majoring in Geology. Doug’s interest was focused on plate tectonics until circumstances led him to be employed by the city of Dartmouth in 1976 to 1981. Originally, Doug worked in Park and Grounds and then moved to Dartmouth Transit in 1978. Following this transition was his final move to the newly formed Metro Transit (an integration of the existing Halifax Transit and Dartmouth Transit at the time) in 1981 where he is employed to date.

Doug Mosher,
RPR, RPT
Metro Transit was formed in 1981, under the banner of the Metro Authority, which was a forerunner of the amalgamation of Halifax, Dartmouth and surrounding communities in 1997, thus forming the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). Doug started his career as a school bus operator with the old Dartmouth Transit in 1978 and moved to the newly formed Metro Transit in 1981 where he continued as a bus operator for another year. In 1982 Doug accepted a term position as a Spare Inspector and continued in this capacity, with a brief stint back on the road as an operator in 1984; he then accepted a full time position as an Inspector in 1984. Inspectors/Service Supervisors were then, and are currently, management/non-union positions. The term Inspector was dropped in 2001 and Service Supervisor is now the official title. Doug is now Senior Service Supervisor and is responsible for the day to day activities of HRM’s conventional fleet of more than 200 buses. Doug has a team of 25 Service Supervisors who supervise a complement of 378 operators, making it possible for Doug to provide a sustainable transit service to HRM’s population of 380,000 residents.

Doug professes that in 1978, jobs were easy to come by and upon signing on in 1981 with Metro Transit, he had long term goals of achieving a management position. He was able to do so in short order. Hard work, dedication, teamwork, and determination are what Doug focuses on and he attributes his rise to his current position to this mind-set. In his words, “You can accomplish whatever you strive to by applying yourself, taking appropriate courses and going for the gold, you set the gold limit.”

Doug is completely satisfied in his current capacity, enjoys working on a daily basis with his team of professionals, and is currently not looking to rise to a higher level. He feels that it is important to recognize that when you reach your comfort level, and love to come to work on a daily basis, that you remain where you are, keeping an open mind to advancement for the benefit of the organization, within that level of comfort. Doug believes that continuing to educate yourself and taking courses is important.

Doug is an avid NASCAR fan, and loves water sports, skiing and most of all, his grandchildren. Upon retirement, Doug hopes to jump in an RV, follow the NASCAR circuit and at the same time take in the opportunity to explore this great country of ours. Since NASCAR will keep him in the US for a few months each year, Doug hopes to get out to the west coast to explore the Grand Canyon and the fault lines out there, going back to his university focus, plate tectonics, which is now a hobby. Doug definitely plans on spending as much time as possible with his grandchildren, Benjamin and Madisson as he approaches retirement.
