Bob Van Slyck, RPR, RAS
THE PASSION FOR RECRUITMENT

In 1993 Bob joined the company now called CCT Inc. CCT Recruitment is one of the very few search and recruit firms in Canada that specialize in placing engineering and manufacturing professionals. Over the past 13 years they have placed 100’s of technical people in positions from technical associate in an automotive plant to plant manager in a foundry. CCT Recruitment presently services many manufacturing companies in S.W. Ontario. Contract personnel for temp to perm or assignment are still a mainstay for CCT Inc. The company has invested in staff training for recruitment procedures and sourcing systems.

Bob graduated from Fanshawe College in London, Ontario in 1971 with a diploma in Electronics. A certificate in Human Resources was achieved as Bob’s career changed from one of Technical Representative to Field Service Manager at Xerox of Canada in 1973. Canadian Institute of Management (C.I.M.) courses were taken at the University of Western Ontario and the University of Waterloo when Bob was transferred from London to Kitchener and was promoted to Sales Executive. After 14 tremendous years of growth with Xerox in Service, Service Management and Sales Bob joined Motorola of Canada as Regional Service Manager.

For several years Bob was Chairman of the Program Advisory Committee representing Industry for the Mechanical Engineering Technology Programs at Conestoga College. He has been a continual active member of OACETT moving through the positions of treasurer to Chapter Chair, Grand Valley Chapter and Regional Councillor. Bob has been a proud member of IPM with his RPR designation for 6 years and he recently completed his program to become a RAS.

Bob has been married for 39 years, has 2 sons and 4 grandchildren. Bob loves NASCAR, CASCAR and enjoys Country Music. As an avid Do It Yourselfer, there isn’t a home renovation or addition that Bob won’t tackle.

Jean Smith, RPR
Artistic Recruiting

For the past 3 years, Jean has been a Recruitment Consultant with Aliant. For the first two Jean was a recruitment specialist for management employees, and this year she has focused on recruiting for one of the Aliant subsidiaries, Innovatia, concentrating mainly on the recruitment of Technical Writers and Editors. Jean is the first Recruiter within Aliant to learn the Holden interviewing method for salespeople.

Jean Smith

In 1998 NBTel merged with the other 3 major Atlantic Canadian telephone companies to become Aliant, the third largest telecommunications company in Canada. Aliant delivers a wide variety of innovative and traditional communications services, including local and long distance telephony, wireless, Internet, e-commerce, interactive multimedia, data and managed network services, to more than two million consumers and over 80,000 enterprises. Aliant complements its industry-leading telecommunications business with strengths in information technology solutions and knowledge-services applications. Aliant's approximately 8,400 employees build on its 100-plus year history by collaborating to deliver the highest quality of customer service, choice and convenience. Aliant is an excellent place to work, offering very attractive compensation packages, on-going training for employees, and a very flexible work environment.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (honours) from Dalhousie University, Jean began her professional career with NBTel (The New Brunswick Telephone Co. Ltd.) in Saint John, NB in 1989. The first 7 years with NBTel was spent working in customer services in a variety of positions, but mostly within the Mobility department. In 1997 she was offered a dual management position as a Team Lead as well as being Market Manager – Cellular Customer Retention. For the next 7 years Jean worked in different marketing positions but her time as a team lead really led her towards wanting a career in Human Resources.

To expand her recruiting knowledge, Jean has been working on a Professional Certificate in Human Resource management and expects to graduate in Spring, 2006. She also took the Registered Professional Recruiter (RPR) course in 2003 and now holds the RPR designation. Jean is trained in a variety of interviewing techniques, but her favorite, which is also the Aliant standard, is Behavioral Event Interviewing (BEI).

Jean’s immediate future plans are to stay in recruiting and would like to continue building her professional career in this area. Another possible long-term goal is to one day pursue a Master’s Degree in Adult Education and perhaps become a member of the Learning team at Aliant.

Jean is married and has a five-year old son, which happily takes most of her personal time! Jean is also a certified English Riding Instructor with Equine Canada, has 2 horses, and has competed in Equine Canada sanctioned dressage competitions. She also enjoys reading books about horse care and training, as well as books about 19th and 20th century history.

Lynda Murray, RPR
Focused on Making a Difference

Lynda states that she has had a wonderful life and a wonderful career. She has had a career that she certainly didn’t anticipate as a young woman. Following in her grandmother’s footsteps, she became a teacher. Lynda was recruited off the University of Saskatchewan – Regina Campus by the Calgary Public School Board. Eventually, the lure of home was too strong and Lynda returned to Saskatchewan. Her career took a turn and she worked for Social Services for the next four years. The next move was the greatest one of her life, she left the business world to stay home and raise her three children.

Finally returning to outside employment, Lynda went to work for Alexander Consulting (now AON Consulting). Her next move was to the consulting practice of Ernst & Young where she spent ten years. She was provided with extensive training in most facets of human resources. During that time, Lynda became involved with the professional HR associations. This led to becoming President of HRMA, SCHRA, SAHRP and Board member of CCHRA.

Lynda currently works for two groups – L. Murray and Associates Inc. and KWA Partners. With Murray and Associates, Lynda works as an independent consultant providing general human resource services. This ranges from employee relations, program evaluation, exit interviews, salary surveys, HR policy, change management, etc. With KWA Partners, Lynda acts as Regional Manager for Saskatchewan providing high calibre career management/outplacement services.

When asked why she started her own firm, her response is “out of adversity.” Ernst & Young was closing its doors in Regina and she wanted to be her own boss. In terms of her employment with KWA Partners, she was asked if she would like to join the firm. Having spent 20 years providing career management services, Lynda was very selective in making this decision, which she indicates has been a very good one. Lynda’s career has taken many turns – never really applying for a job and never really planning where she was going. This is rather odd given most of her work life has involved career planning with others!

Looking to the future, Lynda would like to continue working for a few more years. However, she doesn’t feel that she can ever really retire. She would like to continue working on projects for a long time to come.

Being a cancer survivor, one of Lynda’s main personal interests is the fight against cancer. Having cancer changes the way you view life. However, it is consistent with Lynda’s personal and work mission in life – “To Make A Difference.” Lynda feels she has been very successful in attaining this mission professionally, organizationally and with individuals. It has been a pursuit of truly believing and being passionate about what you are doing.
